The Story of Gyldendal Harbour
As early as 1983, there were murmurs about building a harbour at Gyldendal, but it wasn’t until 1984 that the plans really started to take shape. A group of local residents worked intensively on sketches and proposals for a local development plan.
Drawings for the harbour were produced by the Aarhus-based firm Hoffman & Sønner. Once the drawings were ready, work began on securing funding for the project. A large number of berths needed to be sold to make the budget look viable. Fortunately, sales went very well – and strong local support naturally helped boost motivation. So, after a few adjustments to the plans, all the necessary permits in place, and the finances sorted, the project could finally get underway in the autumn of 1985.
“We owe a big thank you to the people who dedicate much of their free time to maintaining and contributing to the development of Gyldendal Harbour.”
Building a harbour requires a significant amount of materials – sand, gravel, and large granite boulders imported from Norway – and I can fully understand why residents in the village of Lihme were somewhat frustrated by the heavy transport traffic at all hours. A project of this scale demanded a huge amount of time from volunteers, who contributed through building meetings and countless hours of hands-on work. But in 1986, the harbour was completed – or nearly completed; of course, a few small things still needed finishing.
The official opening took place in May 1986 with great celebration, drawing large crowds from near and far. Since then, many have continued to help maintain the harbour and carry out major improvements and expansions – including new floating pontoons for both keelboats and dinghies. Barbecue areas have been added too, to the delight of both sailors and the many tourists who visit our harbour. I believe we owe a heartfelt thank you to those who dedicate so much of their free time to maintaining and further developing Gyldendal Harbour.
